Tavira is the eastern Algarve's main historic town and the quieter alternative to the Vilamoura–Almancil corridor. The town sits on the river Gilão, has a Roman bridge, 21 churches, a long-standing British community, and prices materially below Vilamoura while keeping most of the practical infrastructure.
Most relocators concentrate in the central freguesia (Tavira Santa Maria e Santiago — the historic centre) or in Santa Luzia, a smaller fishing village 3 km southwest, popular for its quieter character and walkable scale.
Cabanas de Tavira, 7 km east, deserves its own mention: a smaller coastal village with a wide beachfront promenade across the lagoon from a barrier-island beach. Strong UK retiree community, more modest infrastructure than Tavira town itself.
Price picture: a 2-bedroom apartment in central Tavira runs €280k–€450k buy or €900–€1,400/month rent. Cabanas comparable is €250k–€400k. These are roughly half the equivalent prices in Vilamoura. Villas inland start around €500k.
Daily-life: Tavira has a working Portuguese town centre with all the basics. The barrier islands (Ilha de Tavira, Ilha de Cabanas) require a short ferry but the beaches are genuinely some of the country's best. Spain border 30 min. Faro airport 45 min. Algarve rail stops in Tavira.
