Faro is the only true year-round city in the Algarve. While Vilamoura, Lagos and Tavira quieten significantly out of season, Faro keeps a working Portuguese rhythm 12 months a year — driven by the university, the regional hospital, the airport, the cathedral, the courts.
The concelho is built around the historic centre (Faro Sé) — pedestrianised old town with the cathedral, marina, and Ria Formosa lagoon front. North and east, the city expanded mid-20th century with residential blocks (Bom João, Penha) — modern apartments at materially lower prices than the coastal resorts.
Santa Bárbara de Nexe, the largest freguesia by area, sits 10 km north and is the Algarve-villa-with-orange-trees market — quintas, traditional houses, ruralidade.
Price picture: a 2-bedroom apartment in central Faro is €220k–€380k buy / €900–€1,300 rent — the cheapest section of the entire Algarve coast considering urban amenities. A villa in Santa Bárbara de Nexe runs €400k–€900k depending on plot and condition.
Practical: Faro has the only Algarve hospital with full specialist services (ULS do Algarve), the airport (10 min), the only Algarve university, the densest year-round restaurant scene. Public transport (bus + train) is the strongest in the Algarve.
